Weather Logger 2001 version 4.0b is now shipping!

Congratulations on your purchase of the Radio Shack or Oregon Scientific electronic weather station. You have one of the best home weather stations on the market. Your weather station was manufactured by Huger of Germany.

By now you've probably checked out AccuWeather's software that came with the weather station and found it too glitzy, hard to read (are those 3s or 8s in the display?), confusing to operate (how do I set up the COM port in this thing?), and lacking in the features that you want to see in a computerized weather station. You've also found out that in order to see the graphs that the AccuWeather program displays, you need a $500 software add-on. It turns out that the program is just a front end for AccuWeather's online weather service.

If you're a serious weather watcher, you're looking for a simple, easy to use program to read the data from your weather station, display it in an easy-to- read format, and store the data on your hard drive in an easy-to-use format.

Enter Weather Logger from Jorick Enterprises. Weather Logger eliminates the fluff and glitz and gives you the weather data you need. The weather data is displayed on one text screen or one of four graph screens. The data is also logged to the hard disk in space delimited text format. Two types of logging are supported: Almanac (maximums and minimums stored once every 24 hours) and Observation (current weather stored once every user selected time interval - see below). Either logging mode may be active, or both at once.

Weather Logger's four graphs allow you to dynamically see the past 24 hours, 6 days, 61 days, or one year of weather at a glance. As the day goes on, the graph slowly scrolls to the left as new data is added. Weather Logger updates the graphs once every 3 minutes. All data shown on the graphs is the data read at even 3 minute intervals for 24 hour charts, 15 minute intervals for 6 day charts, and 3 hour intervals for the 61 day charts. The 1 year chart shows the maximums and minimums for each day of the year. Weather Logger saves all data to the disk so you can exit the program, reenter it, and still see the previously logged data intact (minus any period of time Weather Logger was not running). Weather Logger will also print out the charts in full color.

Weather Logger was written with you, the amateur meteorologist in mind. Nearly all of the new features in Weather Logger were suggestions sent in by users who needed more functionality. If you need a feature in Weather Logger, send me the suggestion and you may see it in the next version!

Weather Logger is a 32 bit program designed for Windows 95, 98, and NT, and uses less than 100K of memory for its operation. It will run on the most minimal of systems with no problem.

Weather Logger costs only $4.95, and that price includes unlimited upgrades sent by email.

The Text Screen

Weather Logger's text screen shows all of the outdoor weather data from the station, including maximums and minimums, and even goes a step further by keeping track of the maximum and minimum pressure for the day, maximum and minimum wind chill, maximum rainfall rate, and total daily, monthly, and yearly rainfall amounts. The data on the screen is updated every 5 seconds, which is the rate that the data comes in from the station. Click here to see a sample text screen.

The Temperature and Humidity Chart

Weather Logger's temperature and humidity screen shows the history of the temperature, dew point, wind chill, and humidity on the weather station. The three temperatures are plotted together so you can see how they compare. Weather Logger allows you to "turn off" one or more plots if you don't need it (i.e. plot the temperature and dew point but leave out the wind chill). A reference line atthe freezing point is shown in light blue. All of the graph screens show a reference line at midnight in dark gray. Click here to see a sample temperature chart. Options shown in the sample chart: autoscale on, 24 hour chart.

The Wind Speed Chart

The wind speed chart shows the history of both the average and gust speeds and directions. These are the maximum speeds seen during the previous 3 minutes (for the 24 hour chart), 15 minutes (for the 6 day chart), or 3 hours for the 61 day charts. Any one of the plots may be "turned off" so that the other plot may be seen better. Click here to see a sample wind chart. Options shown in the sample chart: autoscale off, 6 day chart, tropical storm bars on.

The Pressure Chart

The pressure chart shows the sea level pressure history. A light blue horizontal line shows where the average sea level pressure occurs (1013.2 mbs or 29.92 inches). To set your sea level pressure, add one millibar to your station pressure for every 10 meters of altitude. Click here to see a sample pressure chart. Options shown in the sample chart: autoscale on, 6 day chart.

The Rainfall Chart

The rainfall chart shows the 24 hour history of both the rainfall rate and the daily, monthly, and yearly totals. Any plot may be "turned off" to show the other plots better. Click here to see a sample rainfall chart. Options shown in the sample chart: autoscale on, 6 day chart.

Almanac Logging

Every day at 23:59:55 (if almanac logging is enabled by the user), Weather Logger writes the daily maximums and minimums to a text file in space delimited, one line per day format. Weather Logger uses the clock inside the station to determine when to log the data, not the computer's clock.

The almanac file may be edited so that comments may be entered at the end of the line, such as daily weather, snow depth, etc. A header may be added at the top of the file to make the columns more readable. Weather Logger comes with an empty almanac file containing a header.

Observation Logging

Observations may be logged to the observation file at an interval determined by the user. This interval can be every 5, 10, 15, 20, 30 seconds, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 12, 15, 20, 30 minutes, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, or 12 hours. The observation is taken on the even time unit, i.e. an interval of 30 minutes will cause observations to be done at 10:30:00, 11:00:00, etc. Observation logging may be turned off if not needed.

The observation file may be edited so that comments may be entered at the end of the line, such as snow depth, etc. A header may be added at the top of the file to make the columns more readable. Weather Logger comes with an empty observation file containing a header.

Future Enhancements?

Future enhancements are planned but in order to insure that you are completely satisfied with Weather Logger, we need to know your opinion. Simply email us at with your suggestions and we may use them in the next version. The price of the software includes unlimited upgrades by email whenever they come out. You can also receive upgrades by postal mail but this requires a $1 postage and handling charge per upgrade.
